the self-portrait party

whitney houstin said it best: "learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all."

so, in honor of valentine's day, the portrait party will celebrate the greatest love of all with an entire month of self-portrait parties. draw yourself. share the results. self-portraits will be posted until midnight on february 29th.

(feel free to share your portrait swaps also. i will resume posting them in march.)

steven weissman

i think this self-portrait by steven "ribs" weissman is an appropriate send off to the self-portrait party. tomorrow morning, the portrait SWAPS resume!

kerstin klein

kerstin, champion of the last minute portrait swap, sent her self-portrait in the nick of time.

giorgia tzugumik

giorgia sent this gigantic self-portrait with notes like vh1's pop-up video!

lindsay olsen II

lindsay also indulged in one more self-portrait party. she blames its fancifulness on mithi, a roadside diner, and her own teenage fantasy to be part of the first lunar colony... where (note the button) barack obama seems favored for the presidency.

bethany vanderputten II

bethany wanted to share one more self-portrait. she whipped this one up in photoshop, painted it in black and white and glazed color over it.

ujwala prabhu

ujwala sent these two self-portraits with a question: draw from photos or from life ~ which do you prefer? i won't tell which is drawn from which but you can find out on her blog.

petty chaves

i don't speak petty's language as well as i'd like to but this self portrait did come with a caption that i could read, "de Munich a Salzburgo," from munich to salzberg.

penelope dullaghan

our IF queen, penelope, sneaked this self-portrait into a series of mini-paintings. when we all applauded, she said "i am trying to draw more for myself, and thought a self p would be fun." a self p! get it?

maggie summers

with her self-portrait, maggie asks "what do you expect from half of a blind contour?" uh... great eyelashes, i guess.

frances duncan

my old art director, fran, finally caved to my demands and drew a quick, one minute self-portrait. thanks, fran. now... and this is subliminal, mind you... draw dan!

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

this is one of MANY self-portraits by 3MW. she submitted a different one but this one offered an insight to self-portraiture that i couldn't pass up.

andré caetano

andre used this self-portrait to explore the many brush tools in the new illustrator creative suite software. nice, but i am much more impressed by the 62 other self-portraits that he included as an afterthought.

Monday, February 25, 2008

alanna spence

in an effort to take her homework seriously, alanna submitted THREE drawings to the self-portrait party. psst, alanna, partying is not work.

senta plyer

poor senta. this is how she had to spend her weekend: recovering from the loss of her wisdom teeth.

connie jimenez

my old friend, connie, gave her students a self-portrait project. she couldn't resist painting one of her own. "turns out that blick student grade tempera can mix some pretty great colors," she said.

megan ryan

this self-portrait by meg came with a quote by frederick franck: "I have learned that what I have not drawn I have never really seen and that, when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is."

Saturday, February 23, 2008

priya drew this self-portrait at two a.m. while listening to a beethoven sonata after having polishing off half a large devil's food cake while drinking some french wine called cinsault-grenache and something something about a "wills classic milds ciggie." her fans want to know: was she possessed by the devil's food cake?

not really lois

this is a self-portrait of lois but not really. because the painting is still in progress and lois might not be the artist's real name. mystery!

Friday, February 22, 2008

ruth mcnally barshaw

ruth sent a self-portrait so small that i needed reading glasses to see it. (i don't own reading glasses.) "thanks for this bit of exposure," she said. exposure?! ruth, no one can see this! thankfully, she sent the giganto version a few minutes later. if you're gonna show off, gang, SHOW OFF!

and laugh off the gaffs the way ruth does!

chris keegan

more of a collage than a drawing, chris used photobooth to grab his image and tweak it beyond recognition. what would joseph cornell do with this technology, i wonder?

Thursday, February 21, 2008

melanie ford wilson

believe it or not: my fellow IF blogger, "wee," considers this self-portrait a "quickie." holy smokes!

shannon reynolds

even though self-portraits are daunting, shannon rose to the challenge and painted this one as a valentine for the portrait party. thanks, shannon!

arran from london

regarding his self-portrait, arran said "the thing is i couldn't get my hair color right."

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

danny gregory

danny g., the patron saint of drawing for fun, did this self-portrait about his bothersome head. sketchbooks are perfect for this kind of navel gazing. ... ahem, and books about sketchbooks are awesome too.

Monday, February 18, 2008

simon bosés

my best friend, simon, is always reluctant to explain his work but you'll have to take our word for it that this really is a self-portrait.

rural pearl

look between the tree branches to find pearl's self-portrait. it sounds like a poem but it's a fact.

Saturday, February 16, 2008

michael wertz

mister wertz gets extra credit because his self-portrait is an homage to this self-portrait by max beckmann.

Friday, February 15, 2008

peggy mcdowell

peggy lives in north wisconsin "where all the men hunt and the women do crafts." she painted this self-portrait to affirm that she is also a gun-toting maniac.

christine castro

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

this drawing of christine is framed and hangs in my office so that i can brag to anyone who visits. "my wife draw that! it's a self-portrait."

(she has dozens of self-portraits hidden in her sketchbooks. they document new haircuts, outfits, moods, and experiments.)

norman rockwell

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

norman rockwell's self-portrait, one of the best superstar self-portraits of all time, was published forty-eight years ago today on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post.

(eagle-eyed viewers take note of the miniaturized self-portraits of durer, rembrandt, picasso, and van gogh at the corner of rockwell's easel.)

jeremie talbot

selfportrait by jeremy talbot

my friend, jeremie, was one of the first people that i knew who used a computer to make art. when we were in college, it blew my mind that he had a pc in his dormroom. ten years later, he still has to explain computer stuff to me. this self-portrait was drawn from his apple camera, for example. "what's apple camera?" i had to ask.

Monday, February 11, 2008

ah, this painting is how i feel today. i love this self-portrait by yellow because she left work early to paint it. can we all do that this afternoon?

Sunday, February 10, 2008

bethany vanderputten

bethany draws portraits in charcoal mostly but she tried acrylics for this self-portrait. "it's nice to pick up a brush," she said, and the portrait "kinda looks like me."

Saturday, February 9, 2008

the mysterious skulligan (i can't help but think "the bride of skeletor?") created this self-portrait six years ago. she began another one but it's not finished yet. maybe my the end of the month... let's all cheer her on!

steve loya

here is one of a few dozen "tweaked" self-portraits by our iPal, steve.

henry hughes

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

one of my all-time favorite drawings is this self-portrait by one of my all-time favorite artists, my brother.

Thursday, February 7, 2008

lindsay olsen

i had to bully lindsay into letting me post this self-portrait instead of another nice-but-less-self-portraity drawing. it reminded me of a few portrait exchanges that i did in college when friends gave me drawings, suddenly became embarassed by the drawings, but i refused to give them back. i guess i'm kind of stubborn. sorry, lindsay, but thank you for indulging me. this drawing is so much better for the self-portrait project and the process was weird and fascinating.

mithi shafiq

this is one of about a thousand self-portraits that little mithi's been drawing. i'm tempted to post the lot of them but her blog deserves your traffic. so, i'm restraining myself. (this one isn't even my favorite of the bunch.)

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

w.c. williams

w.c. is a man of few words but i can still tell that he's goofy.

Monday, February 4, 2008

this was the first self-portrait that voytaz tackled with ink. (it really can be a daunting step. even ink isn't final though. some of my favorite works of art include the pasted paper, scratch marks, and white-out that are used to finesse an ink drawing.)

mim stella

mim loves drawing herself because she can give her model purple hair and not worry about the repercussions. you're a nutty one, mim stella!

jennifer cranek shock

for her first drawing class last year, jennifer drew a self-portrait. she was pleasantly surprised.

evan tyler

our friend, cindy woods, had surgery yesterday. her nephew, evan, drew this self-portrait as a get well card.

rama hughes

here is my most recent self-portrait. i drew it to document a poorly grown beard before i shaved it away. the detail that surprised me most is the rogue hair that i found in my eyebrow. i've seen it before and combed it down but, upon discovering it in a portrait, i think i'll let it go wild.
